The more than 500 Jesuits who comprise the USA Northeast Province serve 13 parishes, 19 high schools and middle schools, 7 colleges and universities, 4 retreat centers, 2 health care communities, numerous social ministries and 3 centers for Jesuit formation.

These important works are administered by skilled staff members—often Jesuits, but increasingly lay colleagues—who evaluate the Ignatian identity and effectiveness of these ministries, developing collaborative ways to respond to the needs of God’s people throughout the region.

By 2020, when the Maryland Province unites with the USA Northeast Province, a new apostolic center, The Jesuit Center, will become the heart of operations for what will be the USA East Province. This unique center will be located within two existing buildings in New York City, which currently house the USA Northeast Province offices and the St. Ignatius Loyola Jesuit Community.

The Jesuit Center project will restore, renovate and revitalize the USA Northeast province offices, located on New York’s 83rd Street, and transform the neighboring St. Ignatius Loyola Jesuit Community. The modernized Loyola Jesuit community will provide Jesuit priests, brothers and scholastics with a home where they can live simply and remain faithful to the call to serve. Each Jesuit bedroom will be renovated to have a connecting bathroom, and the current elevator will be replaced. A new chapel will be the focal point of the Jesuit community, nurturing the spirituality of the Jesuits and friends who gather for daily prayer and to celebrate the Eucharist.

The construction of six new offices will provide administrators with dynamic working and meeting spaces designed to enhance communication and collaboration, with upgrades to essential utilities that will improve energy efficiency. As our provinces across the U.S. and Canada near the completion of a strategic reorganization in 2020, this unique location will unite Jesuits and lay colleagues in a creative environment that promotes true Ignatian discernment. The project will also include seven conference center guest suites, to alleviate travel costs of Jesuits and guests whose work brings them to New York from other parts of the country.
